How Do I Make More For Retirement?

I don’t know much about retirement plans and I’m hoping I can get some answers. I started a traditional ira through my credit union but I’m not sure if I could do better. Maybe earn more money with my savings, if I transferred that to a different type of ira – like a roth – or maybe even to a type of 401k? I’d just like to get the most bang for my buck but in a way that won’t jeopardize my savings. Maybe I’m asking for too much in this day and age what with the economy the way it is, but I’d like to try.
