According to the China View website, Cervical Cancer in Brunei has gone up over 70% since 2002. Only about 30% of Brunei’s women get pap smears, and since Cervical Cancer is best treated when caught at an early stage, the low numbers of women getting pap smears will tend to lead to a higher death toll for a disease that can be treated successfully when caught in it’s early stages.Cervical Cancer is caused 70% of the time by Human Papillomavirus which is called HPV. In Europe and the United States, there is an HPV vaccine, which together with yearly pap smears and agressive treatment of Cervical Cancer, when found, has greatly reduced the death rate of women from Cervical Cancer.
